Instead, Intel is rumoured to be focusing on improving the quality of their homemade modems in hopes that Apple will use their 5G modem on the iPhone that will be released in 2022. “Intel’s relationship with 5G customers and our plans have not changed throughout 2018 to 2020. We remain committed to our 5G plans and projects,” Intel spokeswoman told The Verge. However, this statement does not rule out that Apple will stop using Intel modem after 2020. This news is bolstered by some reports before this. At the end of the month, Bloomberg reported that Northland analyst Gus Richard claimed that Apple would use MediaTek-made modems instead of Intel modems. In addition, Apple is also rumoured to also be stopping the use of Intel modems in Mac products for 2020. Based on notes made by KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in February, Apple relied too heavily on Intel modems this year in order to reduce their dependence on Qualcomm.
